The Irish Examiner, formerly The Cork Examiner and then The Examiner, is an Irish national daily newspaper which primarily circulates in the Munster region surrounding its base in Cork, though it is available throughout the country.
The newspaper was founded as a broadsheet in 1892, [2] and has been published in tabloid format since 1991. The newspaper was part of the Thomas Crosbie Holdings group, and 'sister paper' to the group's Irish Examiner (formerly the Cork Examiner). The Irish News is the only independently-owned daily newspaper based in Northern Ireland, and has been so since its launch on 15 August 1891 as an anti-Parnell newspaper by Patrick MacAlister. [4] It merged with the Belfast Morning News in August 1892, and the full title of the paper has since been The Irish News and Belfast Morning News.
A newspaper entitled The Irish Times was founded in 1823, but this closed in 1825. The title was revived decades later by Lawrence E. Knox, (later known as Major Lawrence Knox), a 22-year-old army officer. Initially he published thrice-weekly publication but soon shifted to a daily newspaper; the first edition was published on 29 March 1859.
