Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Tangipahoa Parish ( / ˌtændʒɪpəˈhoʊə /) is a parish located on the southeastern border of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 133,157. [2] The parish seat is Amite City, [3] while the largest city is Hammond. Southeastern Louisiana University is located in Hammond.
In 1838, Caddo Parish was created from Natchitoches, as were Madison and Caldwell parishes in the east. In 1839, Union Parish was formed from Ouachita, and Calcasieu was formed from St. Landry in 1840. Five parishes were created in 1843: Bossier, DeSoto, Franklin, Sabine, and Tensas.
