The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 in British India as an auxiliary air force [22] of the Royal Air Force. The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 independently of the army and navy and in a similar format to the British Royal Air Force. [1] It had been a recommendation of the Skeen Committee, which had been tasked to look into demands for the Indianisation of the Indian army. [1] Its first squadron was raised on 1 April 1933.
The Indian Air Force plays a crucial role in securing Indian airspace and also in India's power projection in South Asia and Indian Ocean. Therefore, modernising and expanding the Indian Air Force is a top priority for the Indian government. Over the years, the IAF has grown from a tactical force to one with transoceanic reach.
