Hillsborough County was created on January 25, 1834, from Alachua and Monroe Counties, [6] during the U.S. territorial period (1822–1845). The new county was named for Wills Hill, the Earl of Hillsborough, who served as British Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1768 to 1772. [7] The County was created through efforts by Augustus Steele.
There are 20 judicial circuits in Florida, all but five of which span multiple counties. They are: [4] First Circuit – Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton. Second Circuit – Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, and Wakulla. Third Circuit – Columbia, Dixie, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee and Taylor.
After he left office, Mitchell returned to Hillsborough County, where he was elected as clerk of the circuit court and subsequently county treasurer there.
