A part of the Northside Independent School District (NISD), it opened in 2017. It is named after U.S. Supreme Court justice John Marshall Harlan. It is NISD's 11th comprehensive high school. The 486,000-square-foot (45,200 m 2) building, with a cost of $110 million, is NISD's largest school campus.
The school opened its doors in September 1971, taking its students from Fairfax, W.T. Woodson, Oakton, and West Springfield high schools. It was the second of Fairfax County's "secondary schools," or "superschools," which housed grades 7–12. Lake Braddock, which opened two years later in 1973, was the third of these schools from this era.
