DIU is the first university in Bangladesh to have signed the UN's Commitment to Sustainable Practices of Higher Education Institutions. According to the SCOPUS indexed research publications in 2022, Daffodil International University has been positioned 2nd among all universities and 1st among all private universities in Bangladesh.
The initial planning began in 1994 but the university was established in 1995. In fact, DIU takes the initiative strongly for the creation of non-government universities and supports the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh. It is now operated as a government-approved university under the Non-Government University Acts of 1992 and 1998.
The university provides about 10 to 12 crore taka as scholarship in every year, one of the highest amongst the private universities of Bangladesh. The university provides several scholarships to students including the eLINK and cLINK scholarships established with the support of the European Union.

Notre Dame University Bangladesh was founded to support financially disadvantaged students. One of the early donors was the scholarship program. The university has developed several scholarship programs for national and international students.
