GNBC Code. FASNT. Conestogo (pronounced [ˌkʰɒ̽.nə.ˈs͡t̠ˠəʊ̯.ɡə]) is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the township of Woolwich in Waterloo Region. The population in 2016 was 1,270. [1] The community is located at the junction of the Grand and Conestogo Rivers. Conestogo is a terminus of the Avon Trail.
The bridge was built in 1876 by W. W. Upp over the Conestoga River. In June 1972, it was damaged by the floodwaters caused by Hurricane Agnes. It was repaired by David Esh in 1975 and moved to its present location in the Lancaster County Park over Mill Creek, a tributary of the Conestoga River. Kurtz's covered bridge was first constructed in 1876.
The railroad built a 20-acre (8.09 ha) amusement park called the Beechwood Amusement Park in the Powder Mill Valley in 1907 to provide a potential destination for riders, but abandoned the park in 1909 due to bad management.
