The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences ( UAMS) is a public health sciences university in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is part of the University of Arkansas System and consists of six colleges, seven institutes, several research centers, a statewide network of community education centers, and the UAMS Medical Center.
Although UAMS Medical Center (also known as University of Arkansas Medical Center) was founded in 1879, no patients were admitted or treated at the facility until 1892. The college began holding classes on August 26, 1974. It had 684 students enrolled for its initial semester. In 2005, the school opened an extension center in Wynne, Arkansas. In 2017, the Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 636, which laid out the process for merging EACC and the nearby Crowley's Ridge Technical Institute (CRTI).
The center's more than 24,000 square feet of space were completed in 2010. The HSC is physically connected to the county hospital, University Medical Center (UMC). Students are assigned to a clinical training location during their last two years of schooling. Clinical training can take place in Lubbock, Amarillo, or Midland-Odessa.
