As with all NISD high schools, the school is named for a United States Supreme Court justice, in this case former Chief Justice William Howard Taft , who was also the 27th President of the United States .
It is NISD's 11th comprehensive high school. The 486,000-square-foot (45,200 m 2) building, with a cost of $110 million, is NISD's largest school campus. It opened on August 28, 2017. For the 2021-2022 school year, the school was given a "B" by the Texas Education Agency.
