Pima Medical Institute was founded in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1972 by Richard Luebke, Sr. and his wife, JoAnn. The first program offered was nursing assistant. The medical school began clinical education in fall 2009 with a charter class of 41. The college's enrollment has increased in subsequent years and will reach 480 at full enrollment.
