Centenary University is a private university in Hackettstown, New Jersey. The fort's storehouse in 1931. By this time, the storehouse was the only remaining structure standing on the site. In 1923, the Canadian government designated Fort Langley as a National Historic Site and erected a commemorative plaque near the storehouse. With Dr. Allen T. Bonnell presiding as CCP's first and founding president, classes commenced in September 1965 at the site of the former N. Snellenburg & Company department store on South 11th Street. Under Dr. Bonnell's leadership, enrollment at the college grew from an initial 1,200 to 4,365 students by 1967.
A wing added in 1909 did little to alleviate the crowding in the building. The city experienced an economic boom during the 1920s that lasted into the early 1930s. The construction of high-rise buildings downtown, including hotels and department stores, spurred the need for a new building to house the post office and federal courts.
