In April 2009 a $18.1 million construction project funded by money from the Department of Defense Education Activity which runs the Fort Knox Community Schools system was begun to construct a new metal-roofed brick and masonry-facade two-story building, connecting to the existing vocational school and the gym.
It succeeded Patch American High School (1979–2015, on Patch Barracks), [2] [3] and SHS remains the only DoDEA (DoDDS) high school in the Stuttgart area. Patch's school history, panther mascot , and colors were carried over to Stuttgart; black and gold are also the colors of host state Baden-Württemberg.
Students of the DoDEA school system are subject to two assessment standards to measure academic performance. There is the TerraNova (test) which is taken in Grades 3–11. "DoDEA students scored substantially higher than the national average (50th percentile) in all subject areas.". [7] The other test is the SAT. The SAT is not a required test.
