George Brown Tindall (February 26, 1921 – December 2, 2006) was an American historian and author. [1] A professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1958 until his retirement, Tindall was "one of the nation's pre-eminent historians of the modern South ." [2] He served as president of the Southern Historical Association.

He was born on August 22, 1890 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of the eminent gynaecologist, Alexander Hugh Freeland Barbour and Margaret Nelson Brown. From 1899 he attended Merchiston Castle School in the south of Edinburgh. In 1906 he left the school to attend Marburg University in Germany for one year.
