The initial planning began in 1994 but the university was established in 1995. In fact, DIU takes the initiative strongly for the creation of non-government universities and supports the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh. It is now operated as a government-approved university under the Non-Government University Acts of 1992 and 1998.

According to the SCOPUS indexed research publications in 2022, Daffodil International University has been positioned 2nd among all universities and 1st among all private universities in Bangladesh.
The International University of Scholars, was established in 2015 at Badda with five departments. [3] The government provided permission to the university on 11 January 2016; the request was filled by Jamil Habib. [4] According to the New Age report on 4 August 2022 the university only had only one full professor.
The university was founded in 2003. In July 2010, students protesting against value-added tax on tuition blockaded the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near the university's temporary campus in the Banai neighborhood of Dhaka. Unable to negotiate an end to the conflict, police baton charged the protesters and fired tear gas to clear the road.
