He served as the 55th governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983, and built Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) into a multimillion-dollar restaurant chain.

John Brown Jr. was born on December 24, 1921, in Chinle, Arizona, the son of Nonabah Begay and John Brown. He was educated at the Chinle Boarding School and graduated from Albuquerque Indian School in 1940.
