Nease was originally designed to accommodate up to 1,500 students, however, enrollment has historically been at above capacity. Bartram Trail High School opened in the Fall of 2000 to alleviate overcrowding. With the tremendous population growth, the number of St. Johns County academic high schools tripled between 2000 and 2008. For the 2007-2008 school year, the district had an enrollment of 27,514 students, which according to the St. Augustine Record continued its ranking as "one of the fastest-growing school districts in the state" of Florida.
