The university had 2,237 students and 338 employees in 2010. It is the thirteenth largest university in Sri Lanka in student numbers. In 2009/10 the university admitted 836 undergraduates. SEUSL had a recurrent budget of Rs. 277 million and a capital budget of Rs. 121 million in 2010.
The university expanded during the tenure of Walpola Rahula Thero as vice-chancellor. Rahula Thero was succeeded in 1969 by linguist D. E. Hettiarachchi. At the time, future President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa chaired the campus' United Corporations and Mercantile Union local.

The degrees conferred by the Faculty of Computing are accredited by SLIIT and have received approval from the University Grants Commission pursuant to the Universities Act of Sri Lanka. Additionally, SLIIT is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities as well as the International Association of Universities .
The institute was established in 1968 and offers Graduate, Post Graduate, Executive Education, Diploma and Certificate programmes in the fields of Information Technology, Business Management, Languages, Engineering, and Design. The MBA programme is the flagship programme of the institute and is offered in two year full time.
