Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), is one of the 10 colleges that constitute Makerere University, East Africa,s oldest university. The college was established in 2007 by consolidating the training offered by the University in the disciplines of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Optometry, Radiography and other health sciences.
The trade school that became Makerere University began operating in 1921 with the first classes in carpentry, building construction and mechanics. [13] In 1922, it was founded as the "Uganda Technical College" with additional courses in the arts, education, agriculture and medicine.
In 1997, Faculty of Commerce at Makerere University was merged with NCBS, thereby creating MUBS, a constituent college of Makerere University. The staff and students of both institutions were brought together at the 45 acres (18 ha) campus at Nakawa, approximately 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi), east of Kampala's central business district. [1] [2]
