The Ministry of Education [4] (Sinhala: අධ්යාපන අමාත්යාංශය; Tamil: கல்வி அமைச்சு) is a ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka that directs the formulation and implementation of policies related to primary, secondary, and tertiary education in Sri Lanka.
During the early 1990s, the Sri Lankan government came up with the concept of "University Affiliated Colleges". The concept was triggered by social problems faced by the younger generation, in addition to several committee reports which made recommendations to the government on youth unrest.
Sri Sumangala College (Sinhala: ශ්රී සුමංගල විද්යාලය), in Panadura, Sri Lanka, was founded on 3 March 1909 at Rankoth Viharaya, in memory of Ven. Weligama Sri Sumangala Thero, who played an important role in Sri Lankan Buddhism. [1] It is one of the oldest schools in the country.
The concept of establishing the Open University of Sri Lanka was by Dr. Nissanka Wijeyeratne the Cabinet Minister of Education & Higher Education at the time.
