Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is the public school district serving Miami-Dade County in the U.S. state of Florida. Founded in 1885, it is the largest school district in Florida, the largest in the Southeastern United States, and the third-largest [4] in the United States [5] with a student enrollment of 356,589 as of August 30, 2021.
The name change was met with challenges and several community meetings took place to accommodate recommendations from parents and community leaders. Officially on January 12, 2011, at the school board meeting, Coral Gables Elementary became Coral Gables Preparatory Academy with agenda item C-72 unanimously passing. [4]

The school is named after Michael M. Krop (1930-2018), [4] an orthodontist who was first elected to the Miami-Dade School Board in 1980. He retired from the board in 2004, after 24 years of service. [citation needed] Former board members Janet McAliley and Betsy Kaplan stated that they would not support renaming the school after him. [4]
