The State Bar of Michigan recognized the law at the 37th Legal Milestone dedication on August 28, 2012, at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Lawson graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1969. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1973 and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School in 1976. He was a law clerk for Justice James L. Ryan, Michigan Supreme Court from 1976 to 1977.
