The history of Ohio University predates its founding, as a part of the post-Revolutionary period that saw the nation's first land grants and continues through stages of conflict and change into standardization, digital advents, widespread research, and its present survival with strategic research, retrenchment, and impactful upgrades.
The campus in Lancaster is the center of a six-county region (Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Kershaw, and York) in the north central piedmont of South Carolina. The college began holding classes in the Williams House in downtown Lancaster in September 1959, but by the mid-1960s growth forced it to find a larger facility.
The historic bridges at the Lancaster campus of Ohio University were moved to the campus and sit about 100 yards (91 m) apart. The bridges were built in 1881 and 1884–85 very close to each other, both crossing Poplar Creek, and while the first-built is a wood-and-steel covered bridge and the second-built is all-steel, they are similar in design.
