McAlester is the county seat of Pittsburg County and the home of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. It was founded in 1838 as Perryville, the capital of the Choctaw Nation, and later renamed after James J. McAlester, a coal entrepreneur and politician.
