Cayuga (Cayuga: Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫˀ) is a Northern Iroquoian language of the Iroquois Proper (also known as "Five Nations Iroquois") subfamily, and is spoken on Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, Ontario, by around 240 Cayuga people, and on the Cattaraugus Reservation, New York, by fewer than 10.
Cayuga County is a county in the U.S. state of New York.As of the 2020 census, the population was 76,248. [2] Its county seat and largest city is Auburn. [3] The county was named for the Cayuga people, one of the Native American tribes in the Iroquois Confederation.
Cayuga was so named in 1894 by the first postmaster, William Alonzo Davenport, after his native Cayuga, New York.The community began to grow in the 1880s, gathering people and resources from the earlier communities: Gilmore's Chapel, Wild Cat Bluff and Bethel, all settled in the late 1840s and early 1850's.
