The district was originally formed in 1876 and was known as the Farmers School District. Small schoolhouses served the rural population at that time. The community of Frisco began to emerge in 1902 and the school district was renamed. The district is one of the largest in Texas and the nation. In 1995, Frisco ISD had four schools.
History. Frisco High School was founded in 1902. The original building no longer exists, but other previous locations still do: the Frisco ISD Student Opportunity Center (on Maple Street in "Center City" Frisco) was Frisco High School for many years; in fact, the words "Frisco High School" are still etched into the stone above the main entrance.

In 1901, the Board of Education decreed that the school day would run from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with a 15-minute recess each session. On July 30, 1903, the first telephone in School District 170 was placed in the office of the Superintendent of Schools at a cost of $18 per year.
In 2016 the district had over 2,000 students. In 2019 the district had 1,838 students. In 2019 a board member resigned but then remained on the school board, and there was a political controversy over the board's internal management.
