Erie County was established on March 12, 1800, from part of Allegheny County, which absorbed the lands of the disputed Erie Triangle in 1792. Prior to 1792, the region was claimed by both New York and Pennsylvania and so no county demarcations were made until the federal government intervened.
In 1795, Colonel Seth Reed and his family, natives of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, moved here from Geneva, New York, to become the first European settlers of Erie. Reed erected a log cabin at the mouth of Mill Creek, becoming the first permanent building in Erie. Reed's other sons, Rufus S. Reed and George W. Reed, came to Erie later in the year.
Mario S. Bagnoni (April 2, 1922 – August 5, 2005) was named honorary Mayor of Erie for a day in June 2005. He served eight terms (32 years) on the Erie City Council and was five times elected president of the council. The Mario S. Bagnoni Council Chambers, located in Erie City Hall, were posthumously named in his honor in September 2005. [46]
