It serves the Tucson metropolitan area with a community college district consisting of five campuses, four education centers, and several adult education learning centers. Pima Medical Institute was founded in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1972 by Richard Luebke, Sr. and his wife, JoAnn. The first program offered was nursing assistant. It is on the city's eastern boundary, on 160 acres (650,000 m 2) of land belonging to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The lease was taken out in 1970 and expires in 2069.
