A web style sheet is a form of separation of content and presentation for web design in which the markup (i.e., HTML or XHTML) of a webpage contains the page's semantic content and structure, but does not define its visual layout (style). Instead, the style is defined in an external style sheet file using a style sheet language such as CSS or XSLT.
Improving web presentation capabilities was a topic of interest to many in the web community and nine different style sheet languages were proposed on the www-style mailing list. Of these nine proposals, two were especially influential on what became CSS: Cascading HTML Style Sheets and Stream-based Style Sheet Proposal (SSP).
A web page is a structured document. The core element is a text file written in the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). This specifies the content of the page, [3] including images and video . Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) specify the presentation of the page. [3] CSS rules can be in separate text files or embedded within the HTML file.
