February 27, 1987 [1] The Washington Avenue Historic District is located in Downtown West, St. Louis, Missouri along Washington Avenue, and bounded by Delmar Boulevard to the north, Locust Street to the south, 8th Street on the east, and 18th Street on the west. The buildings date from the late 19th century to the early 1920s.
The history of St. Louis began with the settlement of the area by Native American mound builders who lived as part of the Mississippian culture from the 9th century to the 15th century, followed by other migrating tribal groups. Starting in the late 17th century, French explorers arrived.

History. The neighborhood, now known as Old North St. Louis, was established as the independent village of North St. Louis in 1816 and was annexed by the City of St. Louis in 1841. After being a densely populated neighborhood, Old North St. Louis gradually lost its population over decades and had its community housing stocks deteriorated.
