A template is a Wikipedia page created to be included in other pages. It usually contains repetitive material that may need to show up on multiple articles or pages, often with customizable input. Templates sometimes use MediaWiki parser functions, nicknamed " magic words ", a simple scripting language.
Creation is simple: upon clicking a red link, you will be transported to a blank page. Once there, enter any text and then click the Publish changes button. That's it; the page should have been created. Many pages are created after a user sees an existing red link on a page, and then follows these steps.

This template internally uses mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight, which is considered an 'expensive parser function' (see WP:EXPENSIVE). If used on a page which uses more than 500 expensive parser functions, the output of subsequent uses of this template will be presented using <code>...</code> formatting (without any syntax highlighting) instead.
The text between < html > and </ html > describes the web page, and the text between < body > and </ body > is the visible page content. The markup text < title > This is a title </ title > defines the browser page title shown on browser tabs and window titles and the tag < div > defines a division of the page used for easy styling.

A template is a Wikipedia page whose purpose is to be transcluded or substituted in another page. Templates are usually in the template namespace, but don't have to be. Pages can transclude or substitute any page, not just templates; what makes a page a template is the page's purpose.
