In 2012 it became a constituent college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and was renamed Kirinyaga University College. In October 2016 the university was granted the charter to operate as administratively independent university by the president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta among eight other universities.

History. Technical University of Kenya grew out of the Kenya Polytechnic. The Kenya Polytechnic was founded in 1961. [4] Proposals for the establishment of a technical institute in Nairobi were put forward in the Willoughby Report published in 1949. This led to the creation of the Royal Technical College of East Africa (RTCEA).
