[ 4] His Ph.D. thesis Affinely flat manifolds was supervised by Richard Lashof. [ 5] From 1977 to 1980 Smillie was an instructor at Princeton University.
Laufer joined the mathematics department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook as a faculty member in 1971. His research focused on complex variables and algebraic topology.
