This is a history of the progression of the World Record for the Swimming event: the 200 Freestyle. It is a listing of the fastest-time-ever swum in the event, in both long course (50m) and short course (25m) swimming pool. These records are maintained/recognized by FINA, which oversees international competitive swimming and Aquatics.

On 25 July 2013, FINA Technical Swimming Congress voted to allow world records in the long course mixed 400 free relay and mixed 400 medley relay, as well as in six events in short course meters: the mixed 200 medley and 200 free relays, as well as the men's and women's 200 free relays and the men's and women's 200 medley relays.

The 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships were contested from March 22–25, 2017 at the Indiana University Natatorium at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana at the 94th annual NCAA-sanctioned swim meet to determine the team and individual national champions of Division I men's collegiate swimming and diving in the United States.
The first world record in the men's 400 metres freestyle in long course (50 metres) swimming was recognised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in 1908. In the short course (25 metres) swimming events the world's governing body recognizes world records since 3 March 1991.
The fastest times swum in events at the Universiades (World University Games) are listed by International University Sports Federation (FISU) as a list of Universiade records in swimming. Swimming has been part of every Universiade, and the events are always held in a long course (50 m) pool. The last Universiade was held in Naples, Italy in 2019.
