He was appointed by Union of India as Senior Standing Counsel on 26 June 2004. On 14 July 2008 Ranjan was elevated as an Additional Judge of Patna High Court. He became the permanent Judge on 16 January 2010. He was appointed the Chief Justice of High Court of Jharkhand on 17 November 2019. He was retired on 19 December 2022. References

As chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court, Misra was invited to be a member of the Indian delegation, headed by the Chief Justice of India along with other judges, which visited Australia to participate in the Conference for "Protecting Rights and Promoting Access to Justice" project held between 18 and 27 September 2009.
He became the acting chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court on 3 January 2005, an elevation made permanent on 1 March 2005. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India as Justice on 9 September 2005. On 29 September 2012, he became the 39th Chief Justice of India. After a tenure of a little over nine months as CJI, he retired on 18 July 2013.
