The university is an affiliating university at the under-graduate level and a teaching university at the post graduate level. It is accredited B++ by NAAC. [2]
The University was established by the South Gujarat University Act, 1965. It opened in 1966 and was incorporated as a University on 23 May 1967, and has been recognised by the University Grants Commission in 1968. VNSGU is the first university in India to offer postgraduate courses in rural studies.
The Gujarat Forensic Science University was formed by the Government of Gujarat in 2008. It was created by Act 17 passed in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on 30 September 2008. It was upgraded to the National Forensic Sciences University in October 2020. It is recognised as an Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament.
