He was transferred to Calcutta High Court in 1996 and was appointed Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on 15 November 2000. He took oath as the first permanent Chief Justice of this High Court on 5 December 2000. Thereafter Justice Gupta joined as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2003.
In 1993 he became the Editor of the Delhi based Law journal Current Criminal Report. Vinayagam was elevated as a Judge in the Madras High Court in 1996. He was appointed the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on 17 September 2006. Apart from his judicial career Justice Vinayagam has immense knowledge on Classical and ancient Tamil language.
He was appointed by Union of India as Senior Standing Counsel on 26 June 2004. On 14 July 2008 Ranjan was elevated as an Additional Judge of Patna High Court. He became the permanent Judge on 16 January 2010. He was appointed the Chief Justice of High Court of Jharkhand on 17 November 2019. He was retired on 19 December 2022.

Justice Singh became the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on 1 November 2014 and retired on 7 October 2016. After the retirement he was appointed the Chairperson of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) on 3 January 2017.
