The university was founded under the name of the University of Latakia on 20 May 1971. The name was changed in 1975 to honor the memory of the October War (Tishreen War in Arabic ). In the beginning, the university only had 3 faculties, Arabic literature, science, and agriculture, and an enrollment of 983 students during the 1970s. [1]

The school saw record low enrolment as recent as 2016 and 2017, where it dropped to 591 students, compared to 938 in 2007. On October 19, 2020, a student collapsed and died following a medical incident in class. The school is a sister school to Rick Hansen Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario.
The AAST was founded in April 1978 when thirty to forty sleep technologists gathered. The organization was originally called the Association of Polysomnographic Technologists (APT). The APT for many years grew slowly. In 2000 it had almost 1,200 members. At the end of 2003 the APT had just under 2,000 members.
The dean of services and support leads the efforts of cross-cutting organizations including personnel, fitness, technology, facilities, and security.
