In the United States, a pharmacy benefit manager ( PBM) is a third-party administrator of prescription drug programs for commercial health plans, self-insured employer plans, Medicare Part D plans, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, and state government employee plans.
PBMs have used various strategies over the years to squeeze independent pharmacies, and these tactics are on the rise as the federal government takes aim at reigning in the notorious middlemen.
Sherrod Brown has a chance to get real answer about PBMs during UnitedHealth Group's cybersecurity hack hearing. PBMs drive drugs cost up, run Ohio pharmacies out of business. Brown must get answers.
