Lakota Local Schools is a public school district serving students from West Chester and Liberty townships in Butler County, Ohio, in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati. Serving nearly 15,000 students, [2] it is the largest school district in Butler County, second largest in southwestern Ohio and the seventh largest in the U.S. state of Ohio .
The district was originally unified under one high school, Lakota High School, until 1997 when the district expanded and formed two new high schools – Lakota East and Lakota West. The high school enrolls over 2,500 students in grades 9–12, repurposing the former high school as a freshman building named Lakota West Freshman School.
Brandon Ecoffey of Lakota Times described the plan as "extremely aggressive, and somewhat controversial". Previously the district did not operate a high school building and required high school students staying with the district to attend virtual school. The school is within two hours of three reservations of the Lakota people: the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and the Crow Creek Indian Reservation, whose children comprise the majority of students at the school.
