The building was designed by the Cardiff City Architect, John Dryburgh. The School merged with other colleges in 1976 to become part of South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education (later Cardiff Institute of Higher Education and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff). It is the oldest constituent part of Cardiff Metropolitan University.

In September 2018 it moved to 2 Central Square, north of Cardiff Central railway station and adjacent to New Broadcasting House, the headquarters of BBC Cymru Wales. The school has agreed to take 42,000 sq ft (3,900 m 2) in the building.
