The initial planning began in 1994 but the university was established in 1995. In fact, DIU takes the initiative strongly for the creation of non-government universities and supports the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh. It is now operated as a government-approved university under the Non-Government University Acts of 1992 and 1998.
DIU is the first university in Bangladesh to have signed the UN's Commitment to Sustainable Practices of Higher Education Institutions. According to the SCOPUS indexed research publications in 2022, Daffodil International University has been positioned 2nd among all universities and 1st among all private universities in Bangladesh.
Dhaka University was the main place where the movement started with the students joining and protesting against the Pakistan Government. The DUSU is a university-level umbrella organisation for university faculties and member colleges Students' Unions. The DUSU has four office bearers: President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary. DUSU also includes 1 or 2 Central Councillor (s) from each college affiliated to DUSU.
