The El Paso Independent School District (or EPISD) is the largest school district serving El Paso, Texas ().Originally organized in 1883, it is currently the largest district in the Texas Education Agency's Educational Service Center (ESC) Region 19, as well as the largest district within the city of El Paso and El Paso County.
Bassett was born on December 30, 1931, in Dayton, Ohio, to Charles Arthur "Pete" Bassett (1897–1957) and Fannie Belle Milby Bassett (née James; 1907–1993). [1] Bassett was active in the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. [2] During high school, Bassett was a model plane aficionado.
Bassett was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family moved to California in 1929 and to Santa Monica, California when he was twelve. He attended Lincoln Junior High School where he took up tennis practicing by hitting the ball against the garage door. He became a star quickly in tournaments by the time he attended Santa Monica High School.
Architect Ernest G. Southey created a Georgian style plan set back 100 feet from Fairfield Avenue leaving "ample room to the south of the school for a large athletic field." Bassick Junior High School opened in 1929 with 1,034 students in grades seven through nine and was soon thereafter converted to a senior high school.

Bassitt was recruited out of high school to play basketball collegiately. [1] He chose to enroll at the University of Akron, where he played college baseball for the Akron Zips baseball team, competing in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). [3] Bassitt took a redshirt in his first year at Akron.
