1989. Website. www.ams-sa.org.za. The Association of Muslim Schools (SA) is a national network of Muslim Schools in South Africa . The association consists of 68 schools nationally. AMS-SA encompasses both primary and high schools as well as independent and state-aided schools. It is active in 3 of 9 South African provinces.
The school marked the establishment of the first Islamically -based independent school in Durban, South Africa. The school ran for the first year with a student population of 74. The first set of matriculants, a total of 21, graduated from what was then known as Lockhat Islamia College in 1991. The school was housed in Cato Manor for 12 years.

As of 2007 and 2008, there are 8272 Al-Azhar schools in Egypt. In the early 2000s, Al-Azhar schools accounted for less than 4% of the total enrollment.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif is an Islamic scientific body and the largest religious institution in Egypt. Its headquarters is located in the building of the Sheikhdom of Al-Azhar in the center of the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The history of the establishment of the Al-Azhar Mosque dates back to the year 970 by the Fatimid Caliph Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah.
