Thomas Scott Baldwin was born on June 30, 1854, to Jane and Samuel Yates Baldwin. [2] He worked as a brakeman on the Illinois railroad, then joined a circus working as an acrobat. In 1875, he started an act combining trapeze and a hot air balloon. [3] On January 30, 1887, he made one of the earliest recorded parachute jumps from a balloon. [4]
