Previously a department of the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Music has been within the Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts since the college's founding in 2004.
On April 26, 2018, the School of Music announced that Dr. Eric Allen, Joel Pagán, and Dr. Ryan Smith would be filling the role as interim Goin' Band directors in Fall 2018. Dr. Joel Pagán was appointed director of the Goin' Band in Fall, 2019. The Goin' Band notably played in the 97th annual Macy's Thanksgiving day parade on November 23, 2023.
Lemaire was band director at Tech from 1925–34. He composed the music. Marshall, editor of the La Ventana, wrote the words in 1930. The words and title represent Texas Tech's original athletic teams' name of Matadors. It is the school's alma mater and is sung at athletic events and occasions such as Commencement. The song was created as part of a contest sponsored by the school newspaper, then known as The Toreador. R.C.
