The university began as an intermediate college in 1934. It was promoted to a degree college in 1944. Postgraduate disciplines were introduced in 1985. It was granted the status of a university on 3 January 2013. The university is situated near Jaranwala Road, not far from the historical Ghanta Ghar clock tower of Faisalabad.

On 24 August 2019, the Kala Shah Kaku campus of the university was inaugurated which is known as GCU KSK campus. The college was initiated with only 32 students and 10 teaching staff members. It multiplied to almost 4500 students and the teaching staff working at present is 71 out of 108 and the Non-Teaching staff is 61. The F.A. classes started in 1951, F.Sc. classes in 1952 and B.Sc. in 1960.
