Washington & Jefferson College ( W&J College or W&J) is a private liberal arts college in Washington, Pennsylvania. The college traces its origin to three log cabin colleges in Washington County established by three Presbyterian missionaries to the American frontier in the 1780s: John McMillan, Thaddeus Dod, and Joseph Smith.
The development of intercollegiate athletics at Washington & Jefferson College began in 1890, when students formed the Athletic Association, charging the 75 members a $1 membership fee that went to fund athletics. The football team played its first game on November 1, 1890, a 34–0 win against the Western University of Pennsylvania.

In 1958, the Presidents, who had previously been independent and not members of any conference, joined the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
