Erie County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is the northernmost county in Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 270,876. [1] Its county seat is Erie. [2] The county was created in 1800 and later organized in 1803. [3] The county is part of the Northwest Pennsylvania region of the state.
Erie was established as a borough by act of the General Assembly on 29 March 1805. This act created a Borough and Town Council headed by a burgess. This form of government stood until the City of Erie was incorporated on 14 April 1851, when a mayoralty and Select Council were established. [5]
