Marquette Catholic was established in 1927 by the Ursuline Sisters. It was built at the request of Bishop Griffin, the Bishop of Springfield in Illinois. It was the first coeducational Catholic high school in the Diocese. The Ursuline Sisters have a history of teaching the youth of Alton dating back to 1859.

The district is located west of Alton's central business district on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The Argosy opened in 1991 as a small riverboat casino named the Alton Belle owned by the Argosy Gaming Company and had 296 slot machines and 22 table games. Over 450 patrons attended the opening on September 24, 1991. It was replaced by a larger riverboat, the Alton Belle II, in 1993, and cruised for one hour to meet legal requirements.
The former glory of the East St. Louis nightclub scene included bars that catered to LGBTQ clientele, including an active ballroom and drag scene. New bars and social institutions have since been established, and a small community is growing in Alton, Illinois. The first Alton Pride Fall Festival is to occur October 2020.
