The Indian Air Force has been undergoing a modernization program to replace and upgrade outdated equipment since the late 1990s to meet modern standards. For that reason, it has started procuring and developing aircraft, weapons, associated technologies, and infrastructures. Some of these programs date back to the late 1980s.
The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 in British India as an auxiliary air force [ 22 ] of the Royal Air Force. The enactment of the Indian Air Force Act 1932 [ 23 ][ 24 ] stipulated out their auxiliary status and enforced the adoption of the Royal Air Force uniforms, badges, brevets and insignia. [ 25 ]
The Indian Air Force currently operates seven Air Commands. Each command is headed by an Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the rank of Air Marshal.
